What is Dyslexia?
According to the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that is neurobiological in origin.
What are the signs of Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is often characterized by:
Weak phonological awareness skills like rhyming, syllabification and blending
Difficulty with learning letter names and associated sounds.
Poor phonological memory (holding information about sounds and words in memory)
Difficulty reading real words in isolation
Difficulty with word recognition and fluency
Difficulty accurately decoding nonsense words;
Slow, inaccurate, or labored oral reading (lack of reading fluency);
Difficulty with learning to spell.
These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language and secondary consequences may include problems with reading comprehension and written composition.
How Can a Speech Language Pathologist help?

Oral language comprehension and use (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics)
Phonological processing, including phonemic awareness
Articulation (speech sound production)
Letter/sound knowledge
Word-finding difficulties
Metalinguistic and metacognitive awareness
