Getting Started

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

There is a lot of variability within the realm of normal development, and most children follow a systematic path in developing their speech and language skills. A good starting point is the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) developmental milestones guide, which outlines what to expect at each age. If your child is not demonstrating two or more of these skills for their age, it may be worth contacting a Speech-Language Pathologist for an evaluation. That said, if you have any concerns at all — trust your instincts. Early intervention is always better than waiting. Book a free consultation and we can talk through your concerns together.

What is the difference between speech and language?

Speech refers to the physical act of producing sounds — including articulation (how speech sounds are made), voice (use of vocal folds and breathing), and fluency (the rhythm and flow of speech). Language refers to the broader system we use to communicate meaning — including vocabulary, grammar, understanding what others say, and using language socially. A child can have difficulties with speech, language, or both — which is why a thorough evaluation is so important.

What ages do you serve?

ThinkSpeech serves clients of all ages — from young children to adults. Whether you're a parent concerned about your 5-year-old's reading development, a teenager struggling socially, or an adult looking to improve your communication skills, we're here to help.

How do I get started?

The best first step is to book a free 15-minute consultation with Nidhi. This gives us a chance to discuss your concerns, answer your questions, and figure out together whether an evaluation or therapy is the right next step.

Evaluations & Therapy

What happens during an evaluation?

A speech and language evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of your communication skills. Nidhi will use a combination of standardized tests, informal observations, and conversation to build a complete picture of your strengths and areas of need. Following the evaluation, you will receive a detailed written report with findings and recommendations. Most evaluations take between 1-3 hours depending on the areas being assessed.

What is the difference between an evaluation and therapy?

An evaluation is a one-time assessment that identifies your child's specific strengths and challenges and determines whether therapy is recommended. Therapy is an ongoing process of working toward specific communication goals using evidence-based techniques tailored to your child. Some families come to us for an evaluation only — for example, to get a second opinion or to support a school accommodation request.

How long will my child need therapy?

Therapy duration varies depending on several factors including the nature and severity of the presenting concern, the client's age, parental involvement at home, and whether other support services are in place. Some clients make significant progress in a few months; others benefit from longer term support. Nidhi will discuss realistic expectations with you after the evaluation and will regularly review progress throughout therapy.

How often are therapy sessions?

Session frequency is determined based on each client's individual needs and goals. Nidhi will make a recommendation following the evaluation. Consistency is important — regular attendance and practice at home between sessions makes a significant difference in progress.

Do you offer comprehensive evaluations for Autism and Learning Disabilities?

Yes! ThinkSpeech has partnered with a local psychology practice to offer comprehensive, multi-disciplinary evaluations for Autism and Learning Disabilities. Rather than navigating multiple appointments across different providers, families receive a complete, integrated picture of their child's needs in one coordinated process. Contact us to learn more about this extremely unique signature service at ThinkSpeech.

Telehealth and Location

Do you offer telehealth services?

Yes! ThinkSpeech offers both in-person and telehealth sessions. Telehealth is a convenient and effective option for many clients — particularly for older children, teens, and adults. Research shows that telehealth speech therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many areas of communication.

Where are you located?

ThinkSpeech offers both in-person sessions at our Fairfax, VA office and telehealth sessions for clients across Northern Virginia — including Ashburn, Loudoun County, and surrounding areas. Research shows telehealth speech therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many areas of communication.

What are your hours?

Please contact us directly for current availability. We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate school and work schedules where possible.

Fees and Insurance

Do you accept insurance?

ThinkSpeech is a private pay, out-of-network provider. Many families find that their insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits that can significantly reduce the cost of therapy. We partner with Thrizer to make checking your benefits instant and hassle-free.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes! Speech therapy is an HSA and FSA eligible expense — a great way to use pre-tax dollars toward therapy.

Dyslexia and Reading

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that affects reading fluency, decoding, and spelling. It is not a reflection of intelligence — many individuals with dyslexia are bright, creative, and highly capable. With the right evidence-based intervention rooted in the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, significant progress is absolutely achievable.

Autism & Social Communication

Do you work with autistic clients?

Yes. ThinkSpeech specializes in working with individuals with Level 1 Autism or subtle autistic presentations. We take a neurodiversity-affirming approach that celebrates each individual's unique way of communicating while building skills that support connection and confidence.
