Speech Sound Disorders

Who it's for: Children and adults who have difficulty pronouncing sounds clearly, making it hard for others to understand them.

Speech sound disorders include articulation disorders (difficulty producing specific sounds) and phonological disorders (patterns of sound errors that affect overall speech clarity). Whether your child is struggling to say certain sounds, or their speech is difficult for teachers and peers to understand, early intervention can make a significant difference.

Signs to look for:

  • Substituting one sound for another (e.g. saying "wabbit" for "rabbit")

  • Leaving sounds out of words

  • Speech that is difficult to understand, especially for unfamiliar listeners

  • Frustration or reluctance to speak in social situations

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)

Who it's for: Children who have difficulty planning and coordinating the movements needed for speech.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a motor speech disorder — the brain has difficulty sending the right signals to the muscles used for speaking. Children with CAS know what they want to say but struggle to get the words out consistently. Early, intensive, and specialized therapy is critical for children with CAS.

Signs to look for:

  • Limited babbling as an infant

  • Difficulty combining sounds and syllables

  • Inconsistent speech errors — saying a word correctly once but not the next time

  • Groping movements of the mouth when trying to speak

  • Better understanding of language than ability to express it

Language Disorders

Who it's for: Children, teens, and adults who have difficulty understanding or using language effectively.

Language disorders can affect how a person understands what is said to them (receptive language) and/or how they express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings (expressive language). Language skills are the foundation of academic success, social connection, and emotional wellbeing.

ThinkSpeech takes a rich, play-based and evidence-based approach to building language skills including vocabulary, following directions, storytelling, narrative development, and social communication.

Signs to look for:

  • Difficulty following multi-step directions

  • Limited vocabulary for their age

  • Trouble retelling stories or organizing their thoughts

  • Struggling to understand what they read

  • Difficulty expressing ideas clearly in writing or conversation

Social Communication

Who it's for: Children, teens, and adults who find social interactions challenging.

Social communication involves the use of language in social contexts — knowing how to start and maintain a conversation, understanding non-verbal cues, taking turns, and adapting communication style to different situations. Difficulties in this area can impact friendships, school performance, and workplace relationships.

ThinkSpeech provides targeted, evidence-based therapy to build social communication skills in a supportive and engaging environment.

Signs to look for:

  • Difficulty making or keeping friends

  • Trouble understanding jokes, sarcasm, or figurative language

  • Challenges with conversation — talking too much, going off topic, or not knowing how to start or end a conversation

  • Difficulty reading facial expressions or body language

  • Feeling anxious or overwhelmed in social situations

Dyslexia & Reading Disorders

Who it's for: Children, teens, and adults who struggle with reading, spelling, and written language.

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that affects reading fluency, decoding, and spelling. It is not a reflection of intelligence — many individuals with dyslexia are bright, creative, and highly capable. With the right evidence-based intervention rooted in the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, significant progress is absolutely achievable.

At ThinkSpeech, we go beyond the mechanics of reading. We take a whole-language approach that bridges the gap between spoken and written language — building skills across phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, reading comprehension, vocabulary, oral language, and written expression. Because strong readers aren't just good decoders — they are confident, connected communicators.

ThinkSpeech uses structured literacy approaches — including systematic phonics, phonological awareness training, and decoding strategies — to build strong, lasting reading skills across all aspects of oral and written language.

Signs to look for:

  • Difficulty learning letter sounds

  • Slow, effortful reading

  • Frequent spelling errors

  • Avoiding reading aloud

  • Strong verbal skills but weak reading and writing skills

  • Family history of reading difficulties

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) — Level 1 / Subtle Presentations

Who it's for: Children, teens, and adults with Level 1 Autism or subtle autistic presentations who want support with social communication and connection.

Many autistic individuals are bright, articulate, and highly capable — yet still find social communication exhausting, confusing, or frustrating. They may struggle with the unwritten rules of conversation, reading between the lines, or feeling truly understood by peers and colleagues. These challenges are real and valid, even when they aren't immediately obvious to others.

At ThinkSpeech, we take a neurodiversity-affirming approach — one that celebrates each individual's unique way of thinking and communicating, while building skills that support connection, confidence, and self-advocacy on their own terms. We incorporate theater and improv techniques into therapy — using role play, storytelling, and spontaneous interaction to practice real-world social situations in a fun, low-pressure environment. For many clients, this approach is transformative — building not just communication skills but genuine confidence and joy in connecting with others.

Areas we focus on:

  • Social communication and pragmatic language

  • Understanding and navigating social situations

  • Conversation skills and peer interaction

  • Recognizing and interpreting non-verbal communication

  • Building self-awareness and self-advocacy

  • Managing communication in academic and workplace settings

  • 🎭 Theater & Improv — role play, storytelling, and spontaneous interaction to build real-world social confidence in a fun, low-pressure setting

Signs that therapy might help:

  • Difficulty understanding social rules that seem to come naturally to others

  • Feeling exhausted after social interactions

  • Trouble making or maintaining friendships despite wanting connection

  • Misunderstandings in conversation — saying the wrong thing or missing the point

  • Anxiety in social situations at school, work, or in the community
